Frequently Asked Questions
Clear, authentic answers regarding astronomical prayer timings, Qibla geometry, Zakat calculations, food additives, and platform architecture.
NoorHub uses rigorous astronomical solar position algorithms. The sun's position is computed using Julian centuries, solar mean anomaly, ecliptic coordinates, and the Equation of Time (EoT):
- Dhuhr (Midday): The moment the sun crosses the local meridian (solar transit or solar noon), adjusted by a few minutes of precaution (احتياط) when the sun begins its descent from the zenith.
- Sunrise & Maghrib: Calculated when the sun's center reaches an altitude of -0.833° (accounting for the 0.267° solar semi-diameter and 0.567° atmospheric refraction).
- Fajr (True Dawn / Subh Sadiq): Calculated when the sun is at a negative depression angle below the eastern horizon (typically between -15.0° to -19.5°, depending on the chosen fiqh convention).
- Isha: Calculated either by a specific negative twilight depression angle (e.g., -15.0° to -18.0°) or a fixed duration after Maghrib (such as 90 minutes in the Umm al-Qura standard).
- Asr: Determined by shadow length. In the standard majority view (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali), Asr begins when the shadow of an object equals its midday shadow plus its own height (ظل المثل). In the Hanafi school, it begins when the shadow reaches twice the object's height (ظل المثلين).
The difference between methods lies in the sun depression angles used for Fajr and Isha. Here is the recommended mapping:
| Method Name | Angles (Fajr / Isha) | Recommended Region |
|---|---|---|
| Muslim World League (MWL) | 18° / 17° | Europe, East Asia, Global general recommendation |
| Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) | 15° / 15° | United States, Canada |
| Umm al-Qura University, Makkah | 18.5° / +90m (+120m Ramadan) | Saudi Arabia & Arabian Peninsula |
| Egyptian General Authority of Survey | 19.5° / 17.5° | Egypt, North Africa, Levant, Middle East |
| Univ. of Islamic Sciences, Karachi | 18° / 18° | Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Afghanistan |
| Diyanet İşleri Başkanlığı | 18° / 17° | Turkey, Balkans |
The Qibla is determined using the great-circle initial bearing from your location to the coordinates of the Holy Kaaba in Makkah (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E) using the spherical trigonometry forward azimuth formula:
On mobile devices: If your smartphone has a built-in magnetometer (compass sensor), the compass dial automatically rotates in real-time as you physically turn the phone, guiding you until the needle points directly at the Kaaba.
Tip for mobile calibration: If the compass feels unaligned, wave your smartphone in a smooth figure-8 motion in the air away from metal objects, laptop chargers, or magnetic phone cases to calibrate the sensor.
On desktop computers: Because desktop monitors lack magnetic compass sensors, NoorHub displays the static true compass bearing (e.g. 119° East of True North) and the great-circle geodesic distance in kilometers.
In locations above ~48° latitude during summer, the sun does not dip sufficiently below the horizon (persistent twilight), causing conventional astronomical formulas to produce mathematical errors (e.g., dawn never technically breaking or midnight twilight blending into sunrise).
To address this in strict accordance with the Islamic Fiqh Academy resolutions, NoorHub incorporates recognized high-latitude adjustment rules:
- Middle of the Night rule (Nisf al-Layl): Twilight length is capped at half the period between sunset and sunrise.
- One-Seventh of the Night rule (Sub' al-Layl): Fajr begins 1/7th of the night before sunrise, and Isha ends 1/7th after sunset.
- Angle-Based (Aqrab al-Balad): Proportional estimation based on the nearest temperate latitude where twilight occurs normally.
In Islamic jurisprudence, the Prophet ﷺ defined Nisab (the minimum threshold of wealth qualifying for Zakat) in terms of:
- Gold: 20 Mithqals = approximately 85 grams of fine gold (24 karat).
- Silver: 200 Dirhams = approximately 595 grams of pure silver.
In modern financial markets, the commercial price ratio of gold to silver has diverged significantly compared to prophetic times. 595 grams of silver is valued substantially lower than 85 grams of gold:
The Classical Hanafi Position: Recommends using the Silver Nisab for liquid wealth and cash because it sets a lower threshold, thereby bringing more Muslims into eligibility to pay and maximizing relief for the poor and destitute (أنفع للفقراء).
The Contemporary Majority Position: Many modern scholars (including scholars in the Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali traditions) recommend evaluating cash against the Gold Nisab, because gold has more accurately preserved realistic purchasing power over the centuries.
NoorHub provides both options with live toggle calculation so you can adhere to the school of thought or advisory followed by your local scholar.
An E-number is marked as Mushbooh (doubtful or requiring verification) when the chemical substance can be produced from either halal plant/synthetic origins or non-halal animal byproducts:
- Emulsifiers & Fatty Acids (E471, E472): Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids can be sourced from 100% plant oils (soy, palm) or animal tallow/pork fat. If the packaging lacks a "Suitable for Vegetarians" or Halal certified label, the source is doubtful.
- Gelatin (E441): Often sourced from pork skin or non-zabiha cattle bones unless explicitly marked as fish gelatin or 100% Halal beef gelatin.
- Carmine / Cochineal (E120): A natural red food coloring derived from crushed female cochineal insects. Under classical jurisprudence, insect consumption is disputed (disallowed in Hanafi/Shafi'i/Hanbali; permitted under specific conditions in the Maliki school).
- Enzymes & Rennet: Used in cheese production; can be microbial (halal) or animal-derived.
NoorHub is built to function as an instant digital timetable display for mosques without requiring expensive proprietary hardware. Here is the step-by-step setup:
- Connect your TV or monitor to any computer, Raspberry Pi, Android TV box, or smart TV browser.
- Open the browser and navigate to
noorhub.truxio.bond/mosque.html. - Select your city and configure your masjid's specific Iqamah offset minutes (e.g., Isha Iqamah 15 minutes after Adhan).
- Press F11 on your keyboard (or tap the Fullscreen button on screen) to enter true fullscreen kiosk mode.
- The display automatically highlights the upcoming prayer, shows an active countdown clock, and presents rotating authentic daily Hadith reminders between prayer calls.
Yes, entirely and permanently. NoorHub was established as a non-profit digital waqf (ongoing charitable endowment for the sake of Allah, صدقة جارية لوجه الله). There are no premium subscription tiers, no "pro" features locked behind paywalls, no pop-up advertisements, and no monetization of user attention.
Because NoorHub executes all astronomical and algorithmic code directly in your browser without communicating with external calculation APIs, once a page is cached in your browser memory, core tools (including the Digital Tasbih, 40 Hadith reader, and mathematical calculators) remain completely functional even without active internet access.
We take accuracy in sacred matters with the utmost seriousness. If you observe any vocalization nuance (tashkeel), typographical error, or prayer timing variation, please submit a note via our Contact page selecting "Scholarly / Fiqh Correction", or email directly to siddiknurealam1@gmail.com. Please provide the relevant hadith number or classical source citation so our review team can verify and publish the update.
