Biography of Imam Yahya ibn Sharaf An-Nawawi (ุฑุญู ู ุงููู)

Early Life in Nawa
Born in Nawa, south of Damascus. As a boy, while other children played, young Yahya wept if forced to play, preferring to recite the Holy Quran. He memorized the entire Quran before puberty.
12 Lessons Every Day
In Damascus at the Rawahiyyah madrasah, he studied 12 distinct lessons daily with senior scholars across Hadith, Fiqh, Usul, syntax, and language. He slept only while seated when overcome by slumber.
Uncompromising Zuhd
As head of Dar al-Hadith al-Ashrafiyyah, he declined any stipend. He subsisted entirely on bread and figs sent by his father. He courageously stood before Sultan Baybars to defend civilian taxes.
Short Life, Eternal Barakah

Many classical scholars compiled "Forty Hadith" collections based on popular virtue narrations, yet Imam an-Nawawiโs compilation stands peerless in Islamic history. Rather than focusing merely on virtues of actions (Fada'il al-A'mal), Imam an-Nawawi deliberately chose 42 ahadith where each hadith forms "a grand foundation of the religion (Qa'idah 'Adheemah min Qawa'id ad-Deen)".
